5 Healthy Snacks You Can Make in 5 Minutes

Some days you don’t have 10 minutes. You’re between calls, or a deadline is close, or you’ve just realised you haven’t eaten since morning. On those days I need a snack that goes from idea to plate before I lose the motivation to make it.

These five are what I reach for. Each one needs only a few ingredients, almost no cooking skill, and a single plate or bowl to wash.

What Counts as a 5-Minute Snack?

For me, the five minutes include everything: taking things out, chopping, mixing, and serving. If a recipe needs soaking, marinating, or waiting for something to cool, it doesn’t make this list. If you want a little more time to play with, my guide to 7 Easy Healthy Snacks You Can Make in 10 Minutes has more options.

5 Healthy Snacks Ready in 5 Minutes

1. Peanut Butter and Banana Roll

Spread natural peanut butter on a whole wheat roti or a slice of multigrain bread. Place a peeled banana at one end and roll it up. Cut into bite-sized pieces if you like.

It gives you carbs for quick energy and fat and protein to keep you full. Pick a peanut butter that lists only peanuts and salt on the label.

2. Cucumber Chaat

Dice a cucumber and add chopped onion, a pinch of salt, black pepper, roasted cumin powder, and a squeeze of lemon. Toss and eat.

This is my go-to when I want something chatpata without any guilt. It’s hydrating, low in calories, and tastes like a street snack.

3. Dahi with Roasted Seeds and Fruit

Spoon thick dahi into a bowl. Top with a handful of pumpkin or sunflower seeds and a few slices of banana, apple, or whatever fruit is in the house.

Dahi gives you protein and probiotics, and the seeds add crunch. I skip sweeteners most of the time, since ripe fruit is sweet enough.

4. Roasted Chana with Chopped Onion and Tomato

Take a handful of ready-roasted chana, which is easy to find in any grocery store, and mix it with chopped onion, tomato, green chilli, and lemon juice.

It’s crunchy, protein-rich, and filling. The only thing to check is the packet: buy plain roasted chana without added oil or heavy seasoning.

5. Apple and Cheese Slices

Slice an apple and pair it with a few cubes of cheese or paneer. Add a pinch of black pepper if you like a little kick.

The fibre in the apple and the protein in the cheese make this a balanced snack. It’s also easy to pack if you’re heading out.

Tips to Make 5-Minute Snacks Even Easier

  • Keep a jar of roasted chana, a packet of seeds, and a jar of peanut butter in your pantry at all times.
  • Buy fruit that doesn’t spoil quickly, like apples and bananas, so there’s always something to grab.
  • Wash and store cucumbers in the fridge so they’re ready to chop.
  • Use one bowl for mixing and eating to avoid extra washing up.
